GYROstream's 2024 SoundCheck Report captures a snapshot of today’s music landscape in Australia and New Zealand, exploring how independent artists are releasing music, promoting themselves, engaging with AI, and adapting to live performance challenges. Since 2021, our goal has been clear: to create a platform where independent artists can share their concerns, their strategies for combatting current challenges, and change they strive for in the industry. Going It Alone

Despite the many roles they juggle, an impressive 63.8% of indie artists prefer to stay independent. Maintaining creative control and the ability to drive their own careers outweigh the challenges artists face. Yet, this passion for independence doesn’t come without its hurdles…

Creative Hustle in Promotion

As budgets tighten, artists are finding new ways to make an impact, with 43% of respondents identifying content creation as their most powerful promotional tool. Embracing DIY methods of promotion like social media and creating video content, allows for direct fan engagement and has resulted in artists creatively connecting with their audiences and growing their reach.

Hot Singles in Your Area

With 66% of artists prioritising single releases over EPs or albums, we’re seeing a strong trend toward releasing standalone tracks. (A shift most likely driven by a rapidly changing digital landscape, where editorial playlists on streaming platforms and short-form content are vital for discoverability.
